Here are some famous quotes to get you thinking.
1. It is the nature of the human species to reject what is true but unpleasant and to embrace what is obviously false but comforting. ~ H. L. Menken
2. Thinking is very upsetting – it tells us things we’d rather not know. ~ Brickman
3. The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. ~ H. L. Menken
4. The facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.
~ Aldous Huxley
5. Unlike plagues of the Dark Ages or contemporary diseases which we do not yet understand, the modern plague of overpopulation is soluble by means we have discovered and with the resources we possess. What is lacking is not sufficient knowledge of the solution, but universal consciousness of the gravity of the problem and the education of the billions who are its victims.
~ Martin Luther King Jr. |
6. We are the ones we have been waiting for.
~June Jordan

Sustainability = Success
POPULATION GROWTH AND /OR GROWTH IN THE RATES OF CONSUMPTION OF THE EARTH’S FINITE RESOURCES CANNOT BE SUSTAINED!
This is not opinion, this is fact. It is intellectually dishonest to talk about sustainability without stressing the obvious fact that stopping population growth is a necessary condition for sustainability.
We must educate people to examine carefully the allegations of the technological optimists who assure us that science and technology will always solve all of our problems of population growth, food, energy and resources.
What happens when there are too many people?
As you put more and more people into the world, the value of life not only declines, it disappears. It doesn’t matter if someone dies, the more people there are, the less one individual matters. In other words, nobody will care about human suffering, degradation, poverty, slavery or anything else when we get to a point where there are too many people and everyone is fighting just to survive.
You often hear about Global Climate Change, the high cost of food, the high cost of energy, the need to use cleaner fuels. These are all very important problems, but we need to make everyone understand that population growth is the immediate cause of all of our resource and environmental crises. Overpopulation is the largest of all the problems.
When there are too many people, life expectancy will be shorter. There will be starvation and competition for food resources, leading to wars over food. There will be more pollution caused by all those people, and that will make the climate situation worse. Polluted air will mean more people will be sick. Global Climate Change will mean land that was once good for growing crops will turn to desert, and there will be wars over good farmland. Clean water for drinking is already scarce in much of the world and when there are more people there will be competition for water. As more people cover the Earth, they will use the land where animals now live, and the animals will go extinct. More fuel will be needed to run all the things people use for staying warm and for building things, and again there will be competition for resources.
But don't we have lots of empty space here in North America?
We need to realize that overpopulation is not a problem that we can blame on other countries. Certainly there are more people in other countries but we, here in North American, consume at least 30 times as much resources per person as people in developing countries. Thus, because of our enormous per capita consumption of resources, we can say that the worlds’ WORST population problem is here in North America! In our case, it is a consumption problem more than a growth problem.
We need to set an example and control our own population growth. As well, we need to set an example and control our consumption growth. Instead, we are not even honouring our commitments to the Kyoto accord (where all the countries promised to reduce greenhouse gas emissions). This is shameful.
Why does this matter to me?
How long do you expect to live?
If the world population doubles in 50 years, the problems will start happening before 50 years from now. This will probably be during your lifetime. |
Many of the world leaders, politicians, corporations, big business owners, religious leaders, and other decision makers know that they will probably be dead before the problems of global overpopulation become really serious. They are more concerned with getting rich now and enjoying the benefits avaiable to them during their own lifetime. They don't really care too much about what will happen after they are gone.
You are important, because you can think. If there was ever a time when the human race needs people who will think, it’s right now.
To be successful with this experiment of human life on Earth, we have to understand science and mathematics. It’s up to us as participants in a democracy to steer our politicians with our votes. If you are too young to vote, talk to your parents and your teachers. Show them the math. We can't wait for a hero to come and fix it for us.
We have to be the ones to do it.
"We are the ones we have been waiting for."
