The Hubble space telescope

Edwin Powell Hubble
Edwin P. Hubble
(1889 - 1952)

The Hubble telescope was named after astronomer Edwin Hubble. He discovered that many galaxies exist beyond our own Milky Way galaxy. He also discovered that the Universe is expanding, and transformed our understanding of our place in the Universe.

See some pictures taken by the Hubble telescope.

NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. NASA has an excellent website full of information for students. Visit the NASA website.

Another great place to find out more about the Hubble telescope and see a gallery of pictures is Hubblesite.

In 1989, the Hubble Space Telescope was launched into space. It drifts in an orbit 569 km (353 miles) above the Earth’s surface, at the boundary of Earth’s atmosphere and space, where it can see clearly. From there it takes pictures of the Universe, showing us everything from nearby planets to distant galaxies.

Pictures from the Hubble telescope and other space telescopes help us understand our relationship to the Universe in a whole new way.
