The Hubble space telescope
Edwin P. Hubble
(1889 - 1952) |
The Hubble telescope was named after astronomer Edwin Hubble. He discovered that many galaxies exist beyond our own Milky Way galaxy. He also discovered that the Universe is expanding, and transformed our understanding of our place in the Universe.

In 1989, the Hubble Space Telescope was launched into space. It drifts in an orbit 569 km (353 miles) above the Earth’s surface, at the boundary of Earth’s atmosphere and space, where it can see clearly. From there it takes pictures of the Universe, showing us everything from nearby planets to distant galaxies.
Pictures from the Hubble telescope and other space telescopes help us understand our relationship to the Universe in a whole new way.
